I am currently working on a Dell PC for a friend who was
foolish enough to be file-sharing and also not running an
anti-virus, or firewall. After cleaning the system of the
sasser AND blaster worms (among others) I cant get
windows update to work correctly. When I go to the
windows update page I get the error:

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot
display the requested page. You may find the following
resources helpful in resolving the problem.
Error number: 0x80070424 (which from what I can tell has
nothing to do with my problem.)

Running XP home ed. SP1 is installed.
    My thanks in advance...

0x80070424 is "service disabled"; if your Automatic Updates service is set
to Automatic startup and is currently started, then it should be throwing
something else entirely. Can you check your Windows Update.log file and
post up the recent errors that are showing up in there? That might be
enlightening and give us some way to go with this.

    Thanks,
    Tony
