I have win xp pro sp2 installed.
To connect to Internet I use a 56k modem.
I also have lots of software that would like to 'dial home' occassionally to
check for updates. There is also the possiblity of trojans having a go too.
While dialling has to be ok'd manually (dialler pop-up), I'm still unable to
determine which APPLICATION is trying to 'make the call'.
Is there a log or somesuch that can advise which application is invoking the
    dialler.
Some (valid) candidates that come to mind could be: Sun Java, Adobe
Acrobat Reader, Thunderbird, Firefox, MS products...
While the dialler appears in the Task Mgr list of Applications, nothing else
    does!?

Any suggestions as to how I can determine what is trying to dial out?

    Mant thanks - numpty =s=

Just about any third-party firewall will give you this information. In
fact, that's one of the principal reasons for installing a third-party
firewall. And not only will you know which applications are trying to
access the internet, you get to choose which ones you want to grant
    internet access
