Webroot Spy Sweeper

Discussion in 'Spyware' started by Dick Harrison, Sep 29, 2005.

  1. I have followed this Newsgroup for over a year and have gained much. I use
    Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, Ad-aware, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Zone Alarm
    and CCleaner. I use cable internet connection as my primary connection, but
    also have ATT dialup for access when traveling. ATT recently offered a free
    licenses to Webroot Spy Sweeper -- which I took and installed.

    I do not recall Newsgroup comments on Webroot Spy Sweeper. Appreciate your
    input on the quality of Spy Sweeper and what type of malware is its strength
    (if any).

    Thanks, Dick

    If you go to Spyware Warrior. It has a rogue section indicating BAD anti spyware
    aplications.

    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

    However, about 80~85% down the page you'll find...

    "What follows below is a set of recommended steps for installing anti-spyware protection for
    your PC. If your PC is already infested with spyware or adware, see the instructions for
    getting help included later on this page.

    1. Install an anti-spyware scanner (or two...)

    One basic tool in every user's toolbox of software ought to be an anti-spyware scanner.
    There are several excellent anti-spyware scanners available -- some free, some for pay.
    These include (but are not limited to):

    Ad-aware
    Microsoft AntiSpyware
    Pest Patrol
    Spybot Search & Destroy
    Spyware Doctor
    Webroot Spy Sweeper "

    So

    I've used it for years but it does have its limitations. Its scan engine is
    the same or similar to the one that MS Antispyware Beta uses as they both
    detect the same modifications of the start menu. Ewido is better as it
    detects them but knows they are safe so there is no notification like spy
    sweeper. Webroot has a larger database of malware/spyware so it detects more
    the MSASB. I would give it a 7 out of 10

    My employer is running Webroot SpySweeper on thousands of PC's. It works
    pretty well with Windows XP. We haven't been impressed with the way it runs
    on our Windows 98 boxes.

    I don't have a contract with them for software distribution from any of my
    sites, I have to link directly to them as I already do on my other sites.

    That hasn't stopped you from violating the intellectual property rights of Safer Networking
    or Cedrick Collomb.

    However, you removed unlocker right after Cedrick Collomb posted his message in WinXP
    General.

    Cedrick Collumb unpdated his FAQ
    http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/#faq
    "- Is this website "http://www.pcbutts1.com/" authorised to distribute Unlocker? No it is
    not."

    And I have email with the name of the POC in the legal department of Team SpyBot at Safer
    Networking LTD. indicating ...
    "The domain holder of http://www.pcbutts1.com is not a legal
    (re-)distributor of the anti-spyware software Spybot - Search & Destroy
    and he/she has no right to offer downloads of that software from
    his/her website."

    You can deny it till you are blue in your face but we who have actually contacted the
    vendors/authors know your a liar.

    On another note...

    Three days ago you posted information to create a Registry file. I posted...

    ~~~
    "You left out some *very important information* that a newbie (someone not
    dealing with Registry importing file creation [.REG files]) will NOT be aware of and thus
    without pertinent instructions, what you posted WILL NOT WORK.
    Now go back to your post. Examine it carefully and see what pertinent and very important
    text you left out of the instructions that are severely needed to make to .REG file work as
    expected."
    ~~~

    Have you looked at what you posted and determined "...what pertinent and very important
    text you left out of the instructions that are severely needed to make to .REG file work as
    expected."

    In other words, you got caught trying to foist a dubious version of
    *their* software on an unsuspecting gullible portion of the public,
    and were severely rebuked.

    What ever...

    That's what most of us and the vendors who's software you are not
    authorized to host thought - you don't have permission, never had
    permission, and are just a petty thief with no ethics.

    I don't use it myself however I do clean computers out with it. It finds
    MANY things that Ad-Aware, Spybot, MSAS, Spyware Doctor 3.2, and various
    other cleaners do not find. So yes, in my opinion, it's a great add on to
    your current arsenal.

    NEVER download files from anywhere unless it is from the website of the
    developer, manufacturer or some entity that you trust. They ALWAYS have the
    most up to date files that haven't been tampered with by some third party
    who is "hosting" (read Leeching) those files without permission.
