Well, the subject says it all. The system, protected by NAV (latest
updates), was working 100%, then on next boot, it just returns to the screen
'it is safe to power down'. Win98SE. Is it a virus? No attachements have
    ever been executed.
    TIA

More info. I have been informed that the last thing that was done with the
PC, was that a Word DOC was opened which was received via email (this email
    was expected).

After searching for 'shutdown' virus references on McAffee and Norton) I had
a look in the registry for the normal stuff
    (hkey_local../s-ware/microsoft/windows/current../run) but there was nothing
there. The PC would start in safe mode OK, and even with network enabled. I
then switched off all of the startup>load bits in msconfig and it ran ok.
Then I re-enabled each in turn, and by the end (all re-enabled) the PC
_still_ worked. Huh! But I did have to re-install the display driver, and
now it's all back to normal. I wonder what happened?! But it does appear NOT
to have been any virus. Sorry if I've wasted your time.
