SP2 Installed but not active

  1. Hello folks
Am engaged in a programme to get PC's out into deprived communities for
wider access to the net. Currently stuck on a Hand built pc with OEM XP Pro.

Windows update sent me SP2 and install engine, yet despite 'visual' install
and reboot, no security centre present. LavaSoft and MS Spyware found 110
risks and having quarrantined them -lo and behold many of them are back MS
Spyware running real time but letting the b*ggers back in. Also Pop up
    stopper being bypassed!

Have other Xp discs I can use, so the question is....... Do I reformat using
alternative XP disc and start again or do I attempt to knock out spyware &
    trojans
beforehand or both. Its a time thing, because I do this as a voluntary deal
am I wasting my time with this machine ( 3 evenings on this monkey so far)
Or should I perservere? (shame to dump a 512 / 60gig machine) If the latter
what would be your next step?

If it is a time issue, format the drive and start over. Your first
mistake - and I don't mean this in an uncaring way - was to try and
install SP2 onto an infested machine. There may have been damage to the
system from the malware before SP2; I can almost guarantee you that
things are pretty well messed up now. Obviously, don't connect to the
Internet on the new install until you've got SP2 and an av installed.
