    Hello,

I would like to get spyware and/or adware samples from anyone on this
    list.
The reason I am asking is because I am writing signatures for an
Intrusion Detection System and I would like to get samples of the
really annoying spy/adware in the wild to put on the top of my todo
    list.

Please do not send me viruses/trojans - I am only interested in
    commercial adware/spyware stuff for now.

    I opened a gmail.com e-mail account just for this
(), feel free to send me your samples, but be sure
to encode to a text format (include the decoder) or change the
extention of the file to a non executable/zip extension (i.e.
"file.exe1" instead of "file.exe" and "file.zip1" instead of
"file.zip") otherwise gmail will strip out the attachement.

    What's in it for you?
Well... many customers of our product would be safe from annoying
spyware/adware thanks to you. So you will be able to sleep better at
night knowing you did the right thing :-] (the company I work for did
not ask me to post this message, I am doing this only to make my job
easier and that is why I stay anonymous)

    Thank you very much,
    spyadware

also, in the e-mail would be nice to have a short description of name
of the spyware (if known) and where you got it (if known)

    Thanks much!

You supposedly know how to develop an IDS product yet you haven't a clue
of how to find spyware? Uh huh.

Thanks for posting that. I don't see how that helps anyone.

I see nothing wrong with asking for samples. Vanguardm, I do have
plenty of samples to work with, but I thought that since this list is
discussing spyware, it would be a good idea for me to "also" ask for
samples here. You don't have to send me anything if you don't want to.
This was just a friendly request.

    Have a pleasent day,

You are *lucky* that the NG Charter doesn't forbid it.

In alt.comp.virus and alt.comp.anti-virus requests for virus samples is forbidden by the
    charter.

    "For your newsgroups file:
alt.privacy.spyware software that monitors personal/internet use.

    Charter:
This newsgroup is for discussing news and general information
concerning the software known as spyware that traces (often without
the users permission/knowledge) where people go on the internet and
then sends back the information to a central database for analysis.
Discussion can also include software that monitors
    (knowingly/unknowingly) a user's use of a computer.

Encoded binaries (e.g. pictures, compressed files, etc.) are forbidden.
Posts must be readable as plain text. Advertising is forbidden"

  8. LOL, someone is yanking your chain. Alt groups don't have charters. If
someone made up a charter it has zero-zip-nada authority.

Somone is yanking your chain or you are very naive !

*Many* News Groups have Charters, the alt.* hierarchy is NOT excluded, and they are
registered with the ISC and can be obtained from their FTP server; ftp://ftp.isc.org Many
News Groups have both a Charter and a FAQ. Based upon the Charter and/or FAQ, ISP's will
enforce their respecgtive Terms of Service (ToS) and Authorized Use Policy (AUP) for such
things as; spamming, flooding or other UseNet abuse.

The following URL holds the current Charter for; alt.comp.anti-virus

  10. A small history lesson for you: http://livinginternet.com/u/ui_alt.htm.
The ISC has no official standing: http://www.isc.org/ They can file,
or register as you call it, anything. It doesn't really mean anything for
usenet. This organization hasn't even existed for most of the time that
usenet has existed and they do not seem to claim for themselves the
authority that you're trying to claim for them.
The eAegis people made up a charter. It has no official standing. Only in
the big 8 hierarchies do charters have any real meaning. Anyone can complain
to any ISP about anything. While I've seen accounts yanked for abusive
posting and I've seen people get grief for posting counter to real charters,
I have never seen an account closed based on the "charter" of an Alt group.
Even if it happened somewhere at sometime it still does not give the charter
any official standing. If you wish to believe in the Easter Bunny and
charters for Alt groups fine, but you're babbling nonsense.

So what they are going to do about it?
    Disable your posting privileges?
Big deal, find another host and so on.
Get a life, he didn't spam, didn't post a virus, didn't flood the
    newsgroup, didn't even harness anyone.

He asked politely to receive a sample of what others can find.
Whether the post is genuine, or not, it is not up for anyone to decide
until you email him and get something that shows bad intent.

If you fear that he is using that trick to harvest email, then email him
from an account that you don't care about, or don't.

If you have what he wants, then send it to him, if not then move on to
the next thread and see if you can help someone rather than trying to
play a netcop on an alt. newsgroup which is not even a moderated one.
