Problem Sharing Files Between PCs

Discussion in 'Security Software' started by Peter Lauren, Oct 3, 2011.

  1. Mheh...people with sk1LL2 always want money...frankly I'm outta my depth
    here and have suggested he try a VPN setup or run Apache...heres what he
    wants to do:
    " The
    important thing is that I want the web server to be accessible from
    the Internet and to be able to call php and html scripts from the app.
    server. But I do not want hackers to be able to access code on the
    app. server. If they could access code on the shared folders, that
    would not necessarily be a problem. But if they could access files in
    the unshared folders it definitely would."

    Maybe *he* should hire a local IT pro, eh?

  2. I just tossed yer problem to the peeps in alt.2600...since I'm outta
    ideas. Read that NG and talk at them...might be more helpful.

    Good Luck.

    This just in to the alt.2600 news room. On Thu, 06 Oct 2011 23:08:23
    -0400 it was announced to all in a public briefing, FrozenNorth
    Oh no. Not a bit. You never felt a thing (after a few cold ones that
    go down smooth.. gak! I'm starting to sound like a TV ad for a new
    beer on Usenet now. lol)

    How does the raping of that one song go?? "You gotta keep 'em
    lubricated". :)

    Thank you for the link. I got a bit further that time. When I went
    to the command prompt and typed
    $ net view
    on both PCs, I saw both PCs on both PCs. So they must be in the same
    domain which is the default domain on both PCs. However, when I typed
    $ net share sharename="c:/DirectoryToShare"
    or
    $ net share sharename="c:\DirectoryToShare"
    I got a success message at the command prompt but was not able to
    access files, on the application PC, from the web PC unless I right
    clicked on DirectoryToShare and selected "share with everyone". That
    does not seem very secure. I'm not so much worried about hackers
    getting access to the shared directory as long as they cannot access
    unshared directories on the same PC.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

  6. Yep, its all or nothing with windows :)
    Encrypt any files you dont want shared. One other idea: try a p2p program
    to share files.

    Thank you for your help. At this point I have installed Ubuntu on
    both PCs and am trying that route.

    I have WAMPServer installed. I want to use PHP and MySQL as well.
    PHP calls executables that were written in C++. I do not want hackers
    to be able to access these executables and reverse engineer the code.

    Thanks,
    Peter.
