PC shuts down while I am running a virus scan

Discussion in 'Computer Security' started by =?Utf-8?B?SkFU?=, Aug 29, 2005.

  1. I may have a virus, but I do not know how to get rid of it. Here are the
    problems I have:
1- All of a sudden, laptop is taking extremely long to download desktop
    icons once it's turned on.
2- McAfee virus scan automatically gets disabled even thought my
    subscription is current.
3- When I am able to getb on the net and I go to McAfee.com and run the free
scan, the scan runs for a minute or two and then the computer suddenly shuts
    down without any warning.

    Thanks for your help.

Start by running TrendMicro's Sysclean in Safe Mode (instructions at
link below). I would get all the tools and updates you will need from a
different, known-clean computer with an Internet connection and either
a cd burner or you can use a usb thumbdrive with enough capacity to
    transfer the files.

After you run Sysclean, try your McAfee again. It may need to be
uninstalled/reinstalled. Whatever, you will then want to update your
full-featured av (like McAfee) and do a thorough scan in Safe Mode.

Then continue your cleaning by scanning for non-viral malware, following
the steps at the link below:
