New suggestion for recommended AV software

  1. Hi,
I was browsing the "downloads and trials" section of your home security
website and noticed that Kaspersky is missing from the recommended AV
software ! I haven't used McAfee or Symantec for a while now (McAfee let a
virus through, Symantec seem more interested in grabbing money than
protecting my PC- everything always boils down to the fact that your
subscription will run out in xx days. Shut up and just stop viruses...)
Kaspersky really does seem worth recommending; version 6 has built-in
anti-spyware, it can scan inside .pst files (which it could do definitely
before Symantec), stops malicious html code and generally seems quite light
on its feet. Any chance of getting this added to the list ?

  2. My reply is at the bottom of your message :

I guess no , because these are special offers which the vendor asks
Microsoft for permission to add and Microsoft accepts . Moreover , the
companies there were Gold AV partners some times ago , Kaspersky has never
been Gold partner . (I say "ago" because I am not sure if they are still
Gold partners but they should be now ).

If you want Kaspersky , then you can buy it . I personally don't like v.6 :)

  3. Thanks Panda_man,

I didn't realise all the vendors were gold partners; I suppose I just
thought it was a random listing !

What do you find wrong with V6 ? I only ask 'cos I've had a lot of trouble
with some of the big name AV companies in recent years; McAfee (v6 ? I think)
just let a file called DDM_D.ZIP through, I can't remember the virus name but
that scared me a bit. So I switched to Symantec (whose online scan had picked
up this file in the first place) but got tired of their constant (60 days in
advance ?) "your protection runs out"... which I understand is important, but
their approach was a bit too nagging for me. Kaspersky seems (?) to do the
job in a very quite, out-of the way manner although I guess running a few
    different online scans can't harm.

  4. Kaspersky is definitely one of the best products for full protection and
killing malware. However their version 6 really made me doubt if KAV should
be between the first one .

When I tested it , it was slow and heavy.I used a machine with 1.6 Ghz
processor and 512 MB RAM. It loaded really fast but it slowed down the
machine because it scans Soooo slow that I think KAV is may be the slowest AV
now. Moreover it scans in real-time in all archives and packed files so that
this takes time and the computers cannot work . Believe me I have seen a guy
with KAV which had to scan his own computer (a lot of info in it) for 24
hours so he kept it some days and then got rid of it . Anyway ... v6 has
behaviour analysis part which displayed too much false-positives . I used
settings by default . It thought Windows Media Player 10 in XP for
trojan-invader . With tests of malware in known to be infected sites , it
didn't stop poping up. Moreover , it flagged an MP3 for suspicious ...
Something else I don't like in it is the so called "I-Swift" just to make it
    faster . Why don't they create a new engine ? ? ?
Because I tested Kaspersky Internet Security 6 , I had to test the firewall
.. The firewall is really flexible which is excellent *BUT* by default the
firewall monitors both incoming and outgoing traffic + it is in teaching mode
, asks non-stop ,what is this , what is that . I can change its settings but
I didn't want because I used settings by default for the tests .

I have used Panda - Titanium , TruPrevent or Platinum has never left even a
single malware in and they has always worked great however I currently have
nothing to do with them just because v.2006 are extremely slow and heavy, just
like KAV6 , hmmm.... well almost like KAV :)

    Have you looked at NOD32 ? (www.eset.com)
If you want two way firewall , have the free Zone Alarm (www.zonelabs.com)

I suggest you not to comment these products indetails here no more because
it is Microsoft newsgroups for MS products and related stuff .

    Nice day !
