Within the last day or so I have been experiencing some strange behavior
with my keyboard and mouse. It doesn't happen immediately when I start
up, but does start after a maybe 15-30 minutes.

What happens is the the keyboard becomes unreliable, not producing
letters or producing multiple letters when one is touched. The numbers
at the top of the keyboard only produce the shifted versions of the keys
as does the numeric keypad. The mouse becomes unreliable selecting
mulitple items when it should only select one.

I am not sure if the whatever is happening goes any further or not. A
..pdf document that I downloaded when printed showed what looked like
    Rusian characters.

I have run the malicious software removal tool version 3.0 dtd
10.13.2009 and not found anything so far. Neither has my Panda
    Antivirus software alerted on anything.

I am sending this message in safe mode with networking. Any thoughts on
    what I could check next?

  2. So since everything works in safemode, apparently it is not a hardware
    problem.
Try starting in safe mode where you confirm items that startup one by one.
    Hopefully
you can isolate it that way.

If your system works in safe mode then try another log-in account.
You can also attempt to go to the hardware list and remove the keyboard and
    mouse.
reboot and let XP re-discover the hardware. it is possible those drivers
    are compromised.
Your system could be hijacked by something else.
There are many tools available, several are free or have free demo time
    periods.
Three programs you can try should your problem persist are:
    Malwarebytes
    spybot search and destroy
    ccleaner
There are many more such as ad-aware, HiJack This, root kitty, etc.
