Here is an interesting report from the US Federal Trade Commission
    (www.ftc.gov) on Spyware

    http://www.ftc.gov/os/2005/03/050307spywarerpt.pdf

I thought this quote was an eye opener!

"According to this panelist, there are 800 million computers in use
worldwide, of which 50% do not have even
basic protections against virus attacks, despite years of consumer education
    about viruses.
However, the other 50% - or 400 million computer users - have installed
    anti-virus protection,
and industry can build on that base in addressing spyware. Consumer
    education may be
particularly useful with teens, because it is often the teens in a household
    who are engaging in
the online activities that lead to installation of spyware."
