I have followed the instructions to the "t": I downloaded
my XP patch, tried to extract it, but only got the error
message, "Set-up could not verify the integrity of the file
update.inf. Make sure Cruptographic service is running on
this computer." I then went to
    c:\windowns\system32\catroot2.edb.log and renamed the file
edb.gol as indicated in this discussion thread. I still got
the same error message. How can I get the patch to "take"
onto my system. The worm must be corrupting the catroot2
    files somehow.

    Thanks for your attention.

  2. Try renaming the whole catroot2 folder and then give it another shot. The
worm has not done this. There are other reasons why/how this can happen.
Sometimes it can be caused by doing a system restore. In your case, other
files within catroot2 may be corrupt. Windows Update will recreate the
    entire folder for you.
