Can anyone suggest what they believe is the best *free* real time AV and
    personal Firewall?

    Hi Jesse,

I'm not expert enough to claim to know the "best", and I haven't
tried a free AV for a few years now (I use nod32, which I'm very
happy with), but my current software firewall is Sygate Personal
Firewall (free for personal use). I've never had a problem with this
    firewall.

I have used Sygate firewall for almost 4-yrs. I started with the
free version and now use the pro. Never have I had a problem
with installation or use. I have complete confidence in it.

The best is the one that suits you best, does what you want it to do
and you can configure eeasily. You're unlikely to get a consensus.
You've asked a subjective question, not an objective one :))

I use ZoneAlarm and AVG, both of which I'm satisfied with, you can get
both free but there's a paid for version as well.

What about using NetPeeker 2.60? anyone tried that?

I'm using Sygate right now, but considering NetPeeker because it's smaller
    and less intensive

    Hi Tokakeke,

While that's interesting (especially in terms of your own
system/setup), it certainly does seem unusual. I've had no such
    experience with *my* Sygate. :)
I've used both ZA Pro and Kerio in the past, and though I can't really
comment on how ZA is doing now (haven't used it for about two years
now), I was happy at one point to move from ZA Pro to the free
version of Kerio, and now on to Sygate.

    To each our own! :)

A couple of weeks back, Sygate started taking 100% of my resources also.
After some troubleshooting, I found that I had mistakenly "set to block" a
system process that needed internet access. That process would not stop
trying to connect to the internet, thus, Sygate was working doubletime to
block that process. So Sygate inadvertantly tipped me off to a problem on
    my system.
I've been using Sygate for a couple of years now and have never had a
    problem with it.
