    Dear MSN:

AOL is announcing an alert for subject virus
for MS XP users. The "fix" describes getting
    latest XP patches.

I had all of the critical fixes and security
updates on Friday, July 16 and still got the virus on
    July 19th.

Please look into this problem. The attackers are
    continuing to send the trojan.

    Best regards,

  2. Hi - this isn't MSN. It's a public peer-support newsgroup, manned (and
womanned?) by volunteers trying to help others.
You need good antivirus software that can also scan mail (although I don't
know that will help with AOL). Also need a firewall. Both of these are
    mandatory in today's world....

Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (828750) Are you sure that this was
the patch you applied *after* removing the virus? If you tried to install
it while still infected, more than likely it did not take. I have already
fixed 5 non-updated computers (not mine!!), updated their security patches
and warned them about opening email from people they do not know (which is
one way this virus spreads btw) even though it does not contain an
attachment just an html code that will run invisibly. Do you use Kazaa or
other music downloaders? They pass this on too. Have you blocked traffic on
port 81? Or do you even have a firewall? Did you disable system restore
*before* getting rid of the virus? If not, well, you got re-infected with
files in sys restore. If there is no firewall running on your computer, you
have no one but yourself to blame, with the way things are running rampid
these days, you are playing russian roullete without a firewall.

Out of all 5 of the computers I have fixed over the past two or three
months, not one of them got reinfected. So yes, there is a fix.

  4. Well, I didn't do any of these things, as I'm not the original poster and
don't have any of these problems. I think you meant to reply to him/her
    directly, no? :)

Ya, I meant to reply to the original sender as he was driving me nuts
stating there was no fix, which there is if he/she knew what they were
doing. But I have OE set to hide all read messages and I left then decided
to reply and got too lazy to go thru the settings, sorry.

Yes, as with all viruses, before doing a scan you need to disable system
restore, or else everything you do is for nothing.
