    Gurus,

Are there programs out there which let you surf the web while keeping web
sites from knowing where you are coming from?

If such a creature exists , it should not be a legal one :)

Hackers try to hide themselves , not regular users

If they don't know your IP address how can they send you the web page?

Use your favorite search engine to search for "anonymous proxy server" but
be aware that the proxy server still has to know your IP address. It is
often rumoured that some proxy servers are run by either government spy
agencies or criminals. The proxy server has a complete record of all your
    surfing habits.

No. There are many sites (Kerry mentions them) that claim to do this, but
think about it for a moment: If websites didn't know where you came from how
would they know where to send the webpages to that you were trying to view?

The proxy sites Kerry mentions work by adding an additional step to the
process - you send the request to the proxy, it sends the request on from
its address to the site in question. The site in question returns the
information to the site sending it the request (the proxy). The proxy sends
    the information to you.

See the problem? The proxy still has to know where you are to send you the
information. The website has to know where the proxy is to send it the
information. Someone wanting to trace where that information was sent simply
does it in two steps intead of one step.

It is impossible to be completely anonymous on the internet. Accept it and
    move on with your life.

    Regards
    Rob Moir.
