Are the servers one and the same?

The information on this site .............
    http://www.insideoe.com/resources/communities.htm

advises that MS newsgroups are available on MSnews, the Microsoft public
    news server. i.e. msnews.microsoft.com

I'm posting now from, simply, news.microsoft.com - yet it appears to work.

    Just wondering!

  2. Yes, they are the same. However, there's no guarantee that MS will keep
    supporting news.microsoft.com

    Thank you, Frank.

Have you any idea *why* there are two separate servers? Belt and braces?
    Just historical? TIA

  4. Those are just server names. They resolve to the same IP addresses. Last
time I checked (quite a while ago) there were actually four synchronized
servers to handle the load. When they get out of synch interesting things
    happen.
