Hello,
I have MSN thru Qwest. Everyone on my adddress book is receiving spam sent
from my email address. The hot mail blog describes an identical situation
but I do not use hot mail, just MSN. I have gone round and round with
Microsoft PCsecurity, MSN and Qwest. To make a long story short, PCsecurity
claims the problem is on the MSN server, MSN just sends be back to PC
security and Qwest. Qwest claims I have a "mail bot" and that there is no
problem with the server.
I have tried running the Windows Live Safety Scanner and AVG. No change.
I am at my wits end. Does anyone know where the problem is and how to solve
this? Thanks very much.

Helo,

Verify that the 'spam' you mention is actually sent by you and you are not
being impersonated by someone else (forging from/reply-to address). If you
can post the headers of the spam received, we will be able to check for you.

How would the perp get /all/ the email addresses from victim's address
file w/o access to the PC? However, you may still be right about the
originating computer being different from the victim's system.
Couldn't a mailbot, that infects the victim's PC, later erase itself?
Yes indeed. Headers would be very helpful.

I believe the OP should run MBAM/SAS as an additional check for
malware in their system.

Regards,

Pete

OP is referring to his/her Hotmail Contacts which are available to anyone
who knows his/her password.

If you have a virus protection on the system, run a virus scan. If you do not have any anti-virus protection on the system... you can either download AVG (which is free) for the time being. It is not the best but it gets some of the job done.

When you get a chance go out and purchase Norton Internet Security 2011. The good news here once you have purchased it... you can use the same license on 3 different machines... the activation time of 365 days starts when you install it the first time. So, if you only have 1 machine in the house.. find someone else that also needs the program purchase the program together.

Once you have loaded Norton, run live updates to get the latest virus definitions and then do a full system scan on your machine. If you have a really large hard drive, you may want the system to do its scanning while you are asleep.

Also go to google and type in lavasoft Ad-aware... and download the free version.

After downloading the free version... run it a few times to make sure that you get all the ad-ware and mal-ware off of the machine. (make sure to run updates to make sure you get all the latest protections)

DO NOT GET NORTON 360 - it tends to conflict with many of windows programs.

On a different email account.... email your friends from your address book and let them know not to open any messages that come from your infected MSN account that do not have a subject.

always consider security
But if faced with this problem

Reinstall the operating system
Install and use a good security software
Change your email password
Informed the contacts that you do not send spam!
Difficult to bring up the Support mail service and its forum
Updates and constant use of good security software
