1. avira is anti-virus as is avg is it necessary to keep both?
how to set avira so that it automatically scans per a schedule?

2.ad-aware checks for internet spam. if so, why have this and spamfighter?
how to set either for automatic scan

3. is there any program above which, if present, windows defender is not
needed?

from vendor's literature i could not find how to arrange automatic scans for
the above where requested

thank you

1. No. Use the manufacturer's FAQs/manual and /or the built in help. If
not good enough, use their contact information and contact them.
2. I wouldn't have either application. Use the manufacturer's FAQs/manual
and /or the built in help. If not good enough, use their contact
information and contact them.
3. I do not understand your question. I wouldn't use Windows Defender.

If you cannot figure out how to use the applications, they are probably not
for you.

Supplemental 1b answer:
Right-click on the Avira icon. Choose "Start AntiVir". Choose
"Administration". Choose "Scheduler".
Need more...? Right-click on the Avira icon. Choose "Help". Click on the
"Index" tab. Type in "Schedule" and Double-click on the word "Scheduler"
that is in the list below where you typed in the keyword. The right side
now presents you with the further information. Built-in help, most
applications have it. ;-)
