This machine is a windows xp model that is about 5 years old. I had a
hard drive failure and I installed a new hard drive and ordered rescue
disks from HP. It ran fine for several months but now if I leave the
computer on and don't use it for a while and it goes into sleep mode,
when I come back and start using it again it freezes up as soon as I
click on one of the desktop icons.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing this problem?

Thanks, David

Look in the Power options under Control Panel and see if anything is set to
shut down your hard drive after X number of minutes. Sometimes,
usually depending on the BIOS, the HD doesn't wake, and when you click on an
icon, the OS tries to wake the HD but can't, so the OS freezes until the HD
starts. But it never starts.

My advice is to not allow the HD to shut down.

Thanks David. I will look for that. I did look in the power options a
couple of days ago but I wasn't sure what to look for. I've lost my
touch at repairing computers after I got rid of that old Packard Bell
many years ago.

Just a follow up.

I went into the power options but the HD was not set to turn off when
going into sleep mode. The only thing I changed was the system standby
option. I changed it from 15 minutes to 2 hours. Then I left the
computer on all night and it did not freeze up this morning when I
started using it without turning it off and back on.

Thanks, David

Glad it worked. The standby and hibernate functions have been poorly
implemented by the manufacturers and cause a lot of headaches. I usually
advise my customers not to use them at all, just to keep them from functioning
if they plan to leave the computer on all the time, or to simply shut off the
computer when not in use.
